Why Your GTM Strategy Is Broken (And the 3 Frameworks to Fix It)

Revenue isn't a marketing problem. It's not a sales problem. It's a GTM alignment problem.

When sales and marketing aren't speaking the same language โ€” the same ICP, the same messaging, the same success metrics โ€” pipeline dries up and finger-pointing begins.

Here are the 3 frameworks I use to fix GTM misalignment fast.

Framework 1: The Single Source of Truth ICP

Most companies have 3 different ICPs floating around โ€” one from the founder, one from marketing, one from sales. This creates chaos.

Fix it by building ONE shared ICP doc that includes:

  • Firmographic data (company size, industry, geography, funding stage)
  • Technographic data (what tools they use)
  • Behavioral data (what actions signal buying intent)
  • Psychographic data (what keeps your buyer up at night)

According to Forrester Research, companies with aligned sales and marketing teams achieve 24% faster three-year revenue growth than misaligned competitors.

Framework 2: The Messaging Waterfall

Messaging should flow from positioning โ†’ persona โ†’ channel. Not the other way around.

  1. Category positioning: What market are you in? What are you replacing?
  2. Value proposition: What specific outcome do you deliver, for whom, in what timeframe?
  3. Proof points: 3 data-backed claims that support your VP
  4. Channel adaptation: How does the message translate to email, LinkedIn, ads, and sales decks?

When messaging is consistent across every touchpoint, conversion rates increase. McKinsey found that consistent brand presentation across all platforms increases revenue by 23%.

Framework 3: The GTM Sprint Model

Instead of quarterly planning that gets stale in 30 days, run 2-week GTM sprints:

  • Week 1: Execute the plan
  • Week 2: Measure results, identify what's working, kill what's not, plan next sprint

This keeps your GTM motion responsive to real market signals instead of last quarter's assumptions.

The Bottom Line

GTM isn't a one-time strategy โ€” it's an operating system. Build it right, run it consistently, and pipeline becomes predictable.
